48 Hours in Reykjavik, Iceland

The second port of my Iceland and Ireland cruise back in June was the city of Reykjavik, Iceland. Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, the largest city in the country and is located on the south-west coast of the island. I was at this port for two days and I did a lot for the short amount of time that I had here. I visited a few places in the Golden Circle and concluded my stay here with a trip to the relaxing Blue Lagoon.

I began my adventure on day one with a tour around the Golden Circle, where I visited Gullfoss Waterfall, Haukadalur Geothermal Field and Thingvellir National Park.

My first stop of the day was the breathtaking Gullfoss Waterfall:

Gullfoss Iceland

This was definitely one of the highlights of my trip and I have to say that this waterfall is one of the most gorgeous ones that I have been to. There are many walking paths here, so you can really take in the beauty of Gullfoss from all angles. I wish that I could have spent more time here. I know I will visit this waterfall if I return to Iceland.

My next stop of the day was a geothermal field filled with geysers. I thought that it was really cool to walk around the geysers here and I imagine it is a similar feeling as walking through parts of Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. I didn't have much time here, but I was fortunate to witness a few eruptions.

The final stop of the day was Thingvellir National Park, a rift valley region where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly separating from each other. Here, many of the fissures caused by the plate separation are clearly visible and are just incredible.

I was able to walk through one of these fissures and the feeling is surreal. It's unbelievable how massive they are. This is just one of many in Thingvellir.

Walking around this national park was a cool and unique experience. It's impossible to feel the park's true beauty from these pictures. I would love to spend more time here at Thingvellir on a future trip to Iceland and I highly recommend anyone who visits the country to spend some time here.

Thingvellir

My second day in Reykjavík was more relaxing than the adventure-packed previous day. However, this day was not wasted by just laying around. Instead, I spent a few hours at the famous Blue Lagoon, a large geothermal spa supplied by the nearby geothermal power plant. This was definitely one of my favorite travel experiences and unlike anything else I've seen before.

Blue Lagoon Iceland

The large pool is situated in lava fields outside of the city and is filled with seawater that has been naturally heated under the Earth's crust. The water was nice and warm with a sort of creamy texture and it was very relaxing.

The Blue Lagoon has a lot of extra services like spas, a couple of restaurants and even a hotel, but these can get expensive, so I just stuck with the geothermal pool. My time spent here was unforgettable and I would love to return on a future trip. This was a much needed relaxing day after my action-packed time in Iceland.

Overall, my my time spent in Reykjavík and all of the other places that I visited while in Iceland was great! I had so many unique experiences that I'll never forget about. I can’t wait to come back to see what else this beautiful country has to offer.
